CHANGELOG.MD · MAC · 6 VERSIONS

Release notes

What changed in each version of the Mac app, newest first. Nenrin downloads updates in the background and installs them when you quit; the first time you open a new version, the bar at the bottom says so and links back here.

  1. 1.4.1 Latest

    Download this version

Hide a photo from the large view

    • When you view a photo large, a Hide from Diary button sits at the bottom (or press ⌫). One click takes it out of the diary and moves on to the next photo.

    Update notice

    • After an update, "Updated to x.y.z · See what's new" now stays in the bar at the bottom until you click it.
  2. 1.4.0

Keep a photo out of the diary

    • Hover over a photo and click the button in its corner, or right-click it and choose Hide from Diary. It leaves this day's page but stays in Photos, and you have 5 seconds to undo.
    • "N hidden" below the photos brings them back one by one; Settings › Photos shows the total and can restore them all.
    • What you hide is kept in the diary folder and syncs through iCloud with the diary, so the iPhone app hides the same photos (iPhone app 1.5.0 or later).

    After an update

    • The first time you open a new version, the bar at the bottom links to its release notes.

    Also

    • Nenrin now comes in English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese. If you used it in Korean, French, German, Spanish or Russian, it now appears in English.
    • The date is written out next to it ("Thursday, March 5", in the order your region uses), so 03-05 can't be read as May 3. Singular and plural are right too: "1 photo", "2 photos".
    • Typing in the search field with an input method no longer loses what you're composing.
    • After editing, ⌘G highlights the text as it is now.
  3. 1.3.0

    Search, redone

    • ⌘F no longer opens a small window: the sidebar becomes the search, results stay put, and ↑↓ moves through them while the entry follows to that day and year.
    • Every match is lit in the text, with "Match n / m" by the date and ⌘G / ⇧⌘G to step through them; the year cards on the right show how many places matched.
    • Results are grouped by year, newest first; year chips narrow the scope; space-separated words must all appear.
    • Type 2025, 2025-03 or 03-12 to list a year, a month, or this day across the years.
    • Files still downloading from iCloud are called out and fill in when they land; Esc returns to the calendar, and ⌘F picks up the last search.

    Smoother

    • Switching palettes or languages is now instant, and keeps you on the same day, year and spot.
    • The Settings window no longer grows too tall; it scrolls when there's more to show.
    • When Check for Updates… finds a new version, Nenrin restarts into it as soon as it's downloaded, instead of waiting for you to quit.
  5. 1.2.0

    A new look

    • New color palettes: Paper, Plain, Osmanthus and Celadon in light; Ink and Indigo in dark. In Settings › Appearance, choose Light, Dark or Auto, and a palette for each; a click applies it right away.
    • With a dark palette, scrollbars, menus and checkboxes go dark too.
    • On Auto, Nenrin follows the system from day to night.
    • Paper is still the default, so nothing changes unless you pick something else.
  6. 1.1.0

Every year of a day, together

    • A new “All” button next to On This Day (or ⌘2, or pinch on the trackpad) stacks every year of this day in full, with the photos you took that day. Click a year to keep writing in it, or fill in a year you skipped.
    • ⌘1, or spreading your fingers, goes back to one year.

    Nicer to write in

    • Markdown marks now look like what they mean: bullets for lists, clickable boxes for to-dos, a bar for quotes. The file stays plain text.
    • Lists, to-dos, numbered lists and quotes continue when you press Return; Return on an empty item ends them. Tab / ⇧Tab indent.
    • A new Format menu: Bold ⌘B, Italic ⌘I, Link ⌘K, plus headings, lists, to-dos and quotes. Pasting a URL onto selected text makes a link.
    • Full-width marks typed with a Chinese input method (# 》 · 1。) followed by a space turn into Markdown.

    Photos

    • Photos keep their own shape, in a layout of your choice: Collage, Strip or Timeline (with where each was taken). Pick one in Settings.

    Better with the iPhone app

    • A new iCloud folder is now called “Nenrin”; an existing “Diary” folder stays where it is.
    • If the iPhone app has already set up its iCloud folder, the Mac app uses it, so both write the same diary.

    Also

    • On This Day cards no longer show Markdown marks in their excerpts.
